Let's Break This Wall

Remember those days my friend,
When you would hold my hand and lead my way,
When we would play in the fields,
Where there is a huge wall today.

They say we are different now,
You belong to a land, not mine anymore,
We live on different sides of the wall,
Does that make us different, I am unsure .

We would run in the fields,
Brave the winds and rain together as one,
Take out false voices of the scare-crow,
Trying hard to be a little demon .

How Meena would jump around shrieking,
When we played our little tantrum,
In the same fields my friend,
Where there is just that wall and no more fun.

You celebrate your Independence day,
When we observe republic day this side of the wall,
Your patriotic song echoes in a different tune,
Doesn’t sound like our old National Anthem at all .

You take lessons in a different subject,
That is not taught at my school,
Do you engage in those sacred festivals ,
As you always used to?

Now I can’t see your house,
Khaki clad men guard the wall in those fields,
Though there is no shrieking Meena,
The fields look too scary to me.

How I wish I could see you through the wall,
They say it marks the BORDER between,
It is what has separated us,
Though not separated the love within .

I am writing this poem to send you a message,
Let’s break this wall and come together again,
For I want to play with you my friend,
In the same fields, under the same sun.
